A day in the Life of a White Blood Cell

welcome.gif

Hello. Thank you for visiting my website. My name is Mr. Mitochondria and I live in the blood vessels of the human body.  I want to tell you all about my life as a White Blood Cell.  I was born in the Bone Marrow.

There are approximately 50,000 white blood cells in a drop of blood.  My brothers and I protect the body by attacking the virisus.  I have to eat and drink just like humans do.  I sense when bacteria enter the body then I go after them and engulf them.

What do I look like?

I am covered by a Cell Membrane which keeps my cytoplasm inside and allows nutrients in and waste products out.

The fluid that surrounds chemicals and structures inside me is called the Cytoplasm.

The Nucleus contains my DNA and is my control center.

The Nucleolus

The Chromosomes are coiled structures of DNA and proteins that form in my Nucleus during cell division.

The Nucleolus helps make Robosomes.

Robosomes is the place where Amino Acids are hooked together to make proteins.

E.R. makes lipids, breaks down drugs and other substances, pckages up proteins for release from the cell.

Some of my cell friends have Vacuoles which stores water and other materials.

Mitochondria breaks down food molecules to give me energy.

When I get full, Lysosomes help me digest food particles, waste, cell parts, and foreign invaders.

I also have the Golgi Complex which processes and transports materials out of the cell.
